The uniform introduces a high level of visibility which is needed in many professions. One prime example is the Police. In order for them to perform their duties they need to be instantly recognised. If you are in trouble, what good is it if you don’t know a policeman when you see him. I hear you say that you can never find one when you want one – but that’s another story!!
Workers on busy roads and motorways need to be recognised in order they don’t get hit by passing vehicles. Consequently they wear bright luminescent colours, which again can be classed as a type of uniform. You will always see traffic police, firemen and paramedics wearing either full luminescent jackets or just armbands in order to achieve high visibility.
So uniforms in some cases represent an air of authority. But they also appear in many other professions for different reasons. As a quick aside - we all remember the school uniform. This was introduced for different reasons, one of which was so that students wouldn’t compete with each other in fashion.
In environments where workers wear uniforms, one thing is common – the need to be readily distinguished not only by the general public, but also by their co-workers. Police, fire and ambulance crews need to know who is who at a disaster scene. Team sports are another prime example of this. Football and Rugby players, for instance, must be able to instantly recognise members of both teams or complete mayhem would ensue!!
