SAFETYWEAR

There are many working environments that require the employee to wear items of clothing that will protect him or her from outside interference and dangers. There are many safetywear items available, to protect just about every part of the exposed human body. Examples are protective hats and balaclavas, wrist and sleeve guards, riot gloves, stab and ballistic-proof vests, cut and puncture-resistant trousers – to name but a few.

Here is a list of some situations in the workplace where safety is of paramount importance:-

• The police will wear bullet-proof vests when they are confronted with a dangerous situation.
• A fireman’s uniform is two-fold in that as well as identifying him to others, it offers protection against the ravages of heat, smoke and obnoxious - sometimes deadly - fumes.
• Laboratory workers will almost certainly wear lab-coats (and maybe even gloves) as a protection against physical contact with the materials they are handling.
• Workers on building sites wear compulsory hard-hats to protect themselves from unseen dangers overhead and special safety boots to protect their feet when walking through buildings in the process of being demolished.
• Steeplejacks and hi-rise building/window repairers/cleaners will wear safety harnesses and carry other equipment to protect them whilst working at great heights.
• Hospital staff will wear masks and gloves to protect against reception and transmission of bacteria and viruses.
• And finally, one job that would be 100% impossible without protection is that of an astronaut who must wear all over protection to combat the rigours of space.
